The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) - An Overview

The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) is a not-for-profit voluntary, professional member association founded by medical publication professionals with a vision to become the leading global authority on the ethical and effective communication of medical research.
The aim of ISMPP is to advance the medical publication and communication profession across the world by enhancing the integrity and transparency in medical publications and communications, improving standards and best practices through education, advocacy, and professional collaborations.
Since its inception in 2005, ISMPP has >1500 members with representation from pharmaceutical, biotechnology, device companies, medical publications and communications agencies, medical journal publishers and editors, and professional medical writers. ISMPP promotes high standards for ethical medical publication practices, and encourages its members to maintain the highest standards of practice. ISMPP holds annual meetings in the USA and the EU, broadcasts monthly webinars (ISMPP U), and recently has reached out to the Asia?Pacific region to provide webinars of special interest and hold live educational seminars.
At its core, ISMPP believes in the use of the contributorship model, which details the information on the roles of all those persons who participated in planning, conducting, developing, and publishing medical research. ISMPP in a joint position statement with American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) described the appropriate role of professional medical writers in the development of medical and scientific publications. These scientific publications include manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and abstracts, posters, and oral presentations for dissemination at scientific congresses/conferences.
ISMPP also endorses that professional medical writers should follow Good Publication Practice (GPP3) guidelines and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations and consult appropriate reporting guidelines (eg, CONSORT and others collated by the EQUATOR network).
ISMPP is committed to undertaking a set of educational initiatives and reinforce best practices concerning the role of the professional medical writers. ISMPP has implemented a certification program that offers professional medical writers an opportunity to earn the recently established Certified Medical Publication Professional™ (CMPP™) credential – a hallmark for the expertise, integrity and excellence for professional medical writing by adhering to the best-practice standards. The CMPP credential is valid for 3 years, which is earned by the professional medical writers after qualifying a psychometrically validated examination on all aspects of professional medical publication planning.
Currently, Lambda Therapeutic Research Ltd., is also equipped with such ISMPP CMPP certified medical publication professionals who are involved in developing articles for publication in reputed journals for several pharmaceutical companies.
